Creative Ways to Display a Growing Soft Toy Collection

Start by Choosing Who Gets Top Billing

A collection that has outgrown its corner is rarely a collection you dislike — it is usually just an unsorted one. Before you buy a single shelf, gather every soft toy in the house onto the floor or a bed and spend half an hour with them. Sort into three loose piles: the favourites that come out most weeks, the sentimental ones (first bear, holiday souvenir, inherited from a grandparent) and the oversized or duplicate characters that are lovely but not often cuddled.

That sorting does most of the work. Favourites belong at eye level and within easy reach. Sentimental pieces can sit slightly higher, where they are admired rather than grabbed. The rest can live in attractive storage that still lets them be seen. If two teddies are almost identical, keep one out and store the other — a display is more striking when each toy has a little breathing room.

Shelves and Wall Displays That Do the Heavy Lifting

Wall-mounted shelving is the single most effective upgrade for a crowded bedroom. Floating shelves in a pale wood or white finish keep the look calm, and a depth of around 20–25cm suits most seated bears and medium plush characters. Fix them so the underside sits at least 90cm from the floor in a child's room, and always into a wall stud or with proper plasterboard fixings — a shelf of bears can be surprisingly heavy.

• Stagger shelf heights rather than lining them up evenly; it reads as a display instead of a stockroom.
• Group by character family or colour, then vary the pose: one seated, one lying, one peeking over the edge.
• Add small risers — a sturdy box or a stack of books behind — so back-row toys stay visible.
• Use a picture ledge for the tiniest plush, and a narrow corner shelf for awkward alcoves.

For a large collection, a ladder-style or cubby unit works well: one toy per cubby, with the biggest bears sitting on top. Corner shelves make excellent use of space that nothing else fits into.

Baskets, Benches and Floor-Level Charm

Not everything needs to be on show, and floor-level storage can look deliberately styled rather than shoved aside. A deep wicker basket beside a bed holds a rotating cast of bedtime companions, and a fabric storage bench doubles as seating. Line baskets with a cotton liner so dust does not settle into the weave, and stand the largest bears upright rather than squashing them in sideways.

Try an old wooden crate, painted or left bare, tipped on its side as a makeshift pen for smaller plush. Rope-handled baskets hung on the side of a wardrobe free up floor space entirely. Whatever you choose, keep a shallow tray or coaster underneath baskets on wooden floors, as soft toys can trap damp against the boards over winter.

Swings, Hammocks and Corner Nets

A toy hammock is the classic answer to the soft toy mountain, and it can look genuinely charming when it is not overloaded. Mount a corner net high in a bedroom, using the two wall fixings plus a ceiling hook for larger sizes, and aim to fill it no more than two-thirds full so it sags attractively instead of drooping. Mesh toy hammocks in white or cream disappear against most walls.

A single rope swing — a wooden ring or small trapeze hung from a ceiling hook — makes a beautiful perch for one special bear. Keep it well away from light fittings and above head height. For a gentler option, a short length of ribbon pinned along a picture rail can hold a row of small plush by their labels, though check the labels are securely stitched first.

Rotate, Clean and Protect Your Collection

Even the best display goes stale if nothing ever changes, and constant exposure is hard on plush fabric. Rotate seasonally or monthly: bring stored toys out, give the current favourites a rest, and the whole room feels refreshed without spending a penny.

• Sunlight fades fur faster than anything else. Keep displays off south-facing windowsills and away from direct sun for long periods.
• Damp is the quiet destroyer. Avoid displaying toys against external walls, in conservatories or near radiators, and never store them in a cold loft or garage without a sealed box and silica gel packets.
• Dust settles into pile. A soft brush or a quick tumble in a pillowcase on a cool, gentle cycle at 30°C refreshes most washable toys — check the care label first, and dry them thoroughly before they go back on display.
• Pests dislike clean, dry, airy storage. Shake out baskets and nets each season and check seams for moth damage.

Finally, keep a labelled storage box for the sentimental pieces you are not ready to part with. Stored properly and rotated thoughtfully, a growing collection stays a pleasure to look at rather than a pile to step over.
